HISTORY
At a time when the Green Lantern Corps had been removed from the universe, and the Sinestro Corps had ascended as their successors, Sinestro sought to tighten control, bring order through fear.
The Fear Engine was constructed within the heart of Warworld, the mobile headquarters of the Sinestro Corps. The Engine's purpose was to harness fear and further empower the Sinestro Corps across the stars. The cult of the Sacrament would run the Engine while Sinestro decreed his Lanterns would instill fear across the universe. A levy was placed on each world with the Yellow Lanterns taking the strongest and hardiest to ensure they would not die from the demands of the Fear Engine. As stated by Sinestro, "...those subject to the engine will feel as though they are living their darkest, most acute terrors..."[1]
Hal Jordan was to be broken for the Engine, but fate brought Guy Gardner instead. Sinestro could sense the threat of the returned Green Lantern Corps.[2]
A fierce battle ensued between the Sinestro Corps and Jordan, with the Fear Engine increasing the yellow rings' energies. Confronting his former student, Sinestro ordered this Corps away so he would battle Jordan. Sinestro's ring topped 500% power and upon releasing the safeguards the levels spiked to 1000%.[3]
Soranik Natu and Yellow Lanterns who truly believed in justice joined with her to rescue the captives and remove them from Warworld. This decreased the fear energy and allowed Jordan to unleash his power, destroying not only the Fear Engine but Warworld itself.[4]
