| CHARACTER CHRONOLOGY (listings in comic indexes) |
It is the intent for every character in the DCU Guide to have a corresponding chronology page, which lists all of the character's appearances in chronological order. For more information on the creation of these pages see Template:Infobox_character_chronology. When adding an issue to the chronology it is important to check the index of the issue in question to make sure the chronology is in sync.
If a new story is inserted into the chronology the issues before and after that story should be updated to reflect the change. Likewise if an issue index is added that includes an appearance not yet in the chronology the character chronology page should be update.
In issue indexes the chronology of a character should be listed using the format below.
Chronological listing of last/next appearances in comic indexes
When adding last/next appearances for a character please follow these "rules" for consistency:
- All last/next appearances should be last/next chronological appearance in the character's timeline, which is not neccesarily the same as the publication order of the books.
- Last/next appearances in the issue directly preceding or following the issue in question have not been added in the past, but in order to make it easier to follow a character's appearances from book to book these will be added going forward.
- For appearance in earlier and/or later issue of the same title:
- : '''Character''' (last in issue #?) [For appearance in an earlier issue of the same title]
- : '''Character''' (next in issue #?) [For appearance in a later issue]
- : '''Character''' (in between issue #? and #?) [For appearance in between two issues]
- : '''Character''' (last in flashback in issue #?) [For appearance in a flashback in an earlier issue]
- : '''Character''' (next in flashback in issue #?) [For appearance in a flashback in a later issue]
- : '''Character''' (in between flashback in issue #? and flashback in issue #?) [For appearance in between flashbacks]
- : '''Character''' (in between flashback in issue #? and issue #?) [For appearance in between flashback and later issue]
- : '''Character''' (in between issue #? and flashback in issue #?) [For appearance in between earlier issue and flashback]
Note that in the last two cases "issue" is used in front of both issue numbers to make it very clear that both appearances are not of the same type.
- Last/next appearances in other books should aside from the exeptions mentioned below use the same basic format as above with the addition of the title (and volume if more volumes exist) of the book like this:
- : '''Character''' (last in ''Title'' Vol. ? #?)
- : '''Character''' (next in ''Title'' Vol. ? #?)
- : '''Character''' (in between ''Title'' Vol. ? #? and #?) [For appearances in between two issues of another title]
- : '''Character''' (last in issue #?; next in ''Title'' Vol. ? #? and #?) [For appearances issue of current and another title]
- : '''Character''' (last in ''Title'' Vol. ? #?; next in issue #?)
- For the very first chronological appearance of the character in a flashback (if this is not also the actual first appearance of the character) use:
- : '''Character''' (chronologically earliest appearance in flashback)
- Flashbacks: In basic use the same rules as above exept add "flashback" to the mix, like this:
- : '''Character''' (in flashback following issue #?)
- : '''Character''' (in flashback preceding issue #?)
- : '''Character''' (in flashback in between issue #? and #?)
- : '''Character''' (in flashback in between flashback in issue #? and issue #?)
- : '''Character''' (in flashback in between flashback in issue #? and flashback in issue #?)
- : '''Character''' (in flashback in between flashback in ''Title'' Vol. ? #? and flashback in issue #?)
Linking to issues
To properly link to the issues in question use the following templates:
- Template:c (Comic Name Standardization Template) for links to issues in a different series or when linking to flashbacks etc.
- Template:last, Template:next, and Template:between for links to previous and/or later issues within a series (except flashbacks and behind the scenes links)
See below for proper usage.
Please note
Linking to a specific story within an issue only works with (Template:c). Use regular wiki format in other cases.
The {{last}}, {{next}}, {{between}} template does not know when the 1,000,000 numbers fit into the series so links to those issues will have to be defined.
Linking to issue in a different series (Template:c)
This template automatically corrects comic names in links to the standards used in the Guide, making it easier for users to linking to other books.
The template should be used as follows:
- {{c|Comic Title Vol. X #Y}} with X being replaced by the Volume number and Y being replaced by the issue number. Volume number can be listed as vX, Vol X or Vol. X)
Important! Always include the number sign # when using the template. Input {{c|Superman Vol. 2 #1}} and not {{c|Superman Vol. 2 1}}. Also use regular wiki linking [[Superman Vol. 2 1|''Superman'' Vol. 2 #1]] in title indexes.
Examples
If the volume number is not defined it is assumed to be Volume 1 and the volume number will not appear in the link title.
- Inputting: {{c|Booster Gold #3}} results in: Booster Gold #3
When the volume number is defined it stays in the result. Other examples of correct use:
- Inputting: {{c|Booster Gold Vol 1 #3}} results in: Booster Gold Vol. 1 #3
- Inputting: {{c|Booster Gold Vol 2 #3}} results in: Booster Gold Vol. 2 #3
- Inputting: {{c|Booster Gold Vol. 1 #3}} results in: Booster Gold Vol. 1 #3
- Inputting: {{c|Booster Gold Vol. 2 #3}} results in: Booster Gold Vol. 2 #3
- Inputting: {{c|Booster Gold Vol. 2 #21/2}} results in: Booster Gold Vol. 2 #21/2
Link with Display Name defined (works with all of the above formats):
- Inputting: {{c|Booster Gold Vol. 2 #3|link text}} results in: link text
Linking to previous issue in same series (Template:last)
This template automatically adds a link to the previous issue of a title, unless another issue is defined. Only to be used in indexes for linking to the last previous appearance of a character in same title.
The template should be used as follows:
- {{last}} for links to the previous issue of a title. The text "last in issue #" will automatically be added before the link.
- {{last|Issue No}} with "Issue No" being the issue number of the title that you want to link to. The text "last in issue #" will automatically be added before the link.
Examples
Basic linkage:
- Inputting: {{last}} in the index for Green Lantern Vol. 4 #10 results in: "last in issue #9"
Linkage with "Issue No" defined:
- Inputting: {{last|5}} in the index for Green Lantern Vol. 4 #10 results in: "last in issue #5"
Linking to later issue in same series (Template:next)
This template automatically adds a link to the next issue of a title, unless another issue is defined. Only to be used in indexes for linking to the next appearance of a character in same title.
The template should be used as follows:
- {{next}} for links to the next issue of a title. The text "next in issue #" will automatically be added before the link.
- {{next|Issue No}} with "Issue No" being the issue number of the title that you want to link to. The text "next in issue #" will automatically be added before the link.
Examples
Basic linkage:
- Inputting: {{next}} in the index for Green Lantern Vol. 4 #10 results in: "next in issue #11"
Linkage with "Issue No" defined:
- Inputting: {{next|15}} in the index for Green Lantern Vol. 4 #10 results in: "next in issue #15"
Linking to previous and later issues in same series (Template:between)
This template automatically adds a link to the previous and next issue of a title, unless another issue is defined. Only to be used in indexes for linking to the previous and next appearance of a character in same title.
The template should be used as follows:
- {{between}} for links to the to the previous and next issues of a title. The text "in between issues #XX and #XY" will automatically be added, with XX being the previous issue of the series and XY being the next issue of the series.
- {{between|Issue No1 and Issue No2}} with "Issue No1" being the previous issue number and "Issue No2" being the next issue number of the title that you want to link to. The text "in between issues #XX and XY" will automatically be added with XX being the issue number defined by "Issue No1" and XY being the number defined by "Issue No2".
Examples
Basic linkage:
- Inputting: {{between}} in the index for Green Lantern Vol. 4 #10 results in: "in between issues #9 and #11"
Linkage with "Issue No1" and "Issue No2" defined:
- Inputting: {{between|5 and 15}} in the index for Green Lantern Vol. 4 #10 results in: "in between issues #5 and #15"
- Please Note: If defining previous and next issues both issues need to be defined. " and 15" and "5 and " will not work. Instead use "9 and 15" if you need to link to the the previous issue and the 5 issues later for instance.
